Fire crews are tackling a blaze at Shieldhall Recycling Centre in Glasgow, prompting a warning for nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed.
Emergency response
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to the site near Bogmoor Road shortly after 10.30am on Saturday, September 26. Three fire appliances and a high reach vehicle were sent to the scene.
Glasgow City Council confirmed the facility is closed and urged residents not to travel to the site, advising them to use alternative recycling centres instead.
Smoke and safety advice
Videos shared on social media show orange flames erupting from a pile of rubbish inside the centre, while images from nearby show grey smoke rising into the sky above the city.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We currently have three fire appliances and a high reach vehicle in attendance at a fire affecting recycling centre near to Bogmoor Road, Glasgow. Due to high levels of smoke in the area, we advise nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed."
Cause unknown
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and it is not known if anyone was injured.
A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "Shieldhall Recycling Centre is currently closed (26 September) following a fire on site. We will provide an update as soon as it reopens. Please do not travel to the site and use alternative recycling centre locations at this time. Thanks for your patience."
Chris McCall of the GMB trade union, which represents waste workers in Glasgow, said the incident highlights "how dangerous the waste industry is".
