Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, urging Britain to join discussions on reforming the European Union. The talks, held at Downing Street, also covered the ongoing war with Russia, defence cooperation, and Ukraine's bid to join the EU.
Zelensky calls for UK involvement in EU reform
During the meeting, Zelensky emphasised the importance of the UK's role in shaping the future of Europe. He argued that Britain's participation in EU reform talks would strengthen European security and unity. Starmer, who has previously expressed support for Ukraine, reiterated the UK's commitment to Kyiv's defence and its path to EU membership.
Discussions on Russia and defence
The leaders also addressed the conflict with Russia. Zelensky provided an update on the battlefield situation and stressed the need for continued military aid. Starmer reaffirmed the UK's support, including training for Ukrainian troops and sanctions against Moscow. Both leaders condemned Russian aggression and called for a unified Western response.
Zelensky's visit comes ahead of a major European summit where EU leaders are expected to discuss enlargement and internal reforms. The Ukrainian president has been lobbying European capitals for support, arguing that Ukraine's accession would bolster the bloc's strategic autonomy.
UK's position on EU reform
The UK left the EU in 2020, but Starmer has sought to rebuild ties with Brussels. While ruling out rejoining the single market or customs union, his government has expressed interest in closer cooperation on security and foreign policy. Zelensky's invitation for the UK to join EU reform talks signals a potential new avenue for post-Brexit engagement.
Analysts say the move could help the UK shape European security architecture without rejoining the bloc. However, it remains unclear whether EU members would welcome British involvement in internal reform discussions.
Zelensky also met with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week as part of his European tour. The Ukrainian leader continues to push for a clear timeline for EU accession and increased military support ahead of a expected Russian offensive.
