The Trafford Centre has confirmed that major works are underway in its iconic central dome, with huge hoardings erected around the escalators near Selfridges. The escalators are being replaced as part of a broader refurbishment program across the shopping centre.
Why Are the Hoardings Up?
Shoppers have noticed the hoardings and the removal of the old escalators in the dome, a popular photo spot known for its Greco-Roman architecture. Signs direct those needing to go up to use alternative lifts and escalators in The Orient. Lola's Cupcakes, previously under the escalators, has been relocated to the main mall during the works.
Eco-Friendly Upgrades
A Trafford Centre spokesperson stated that the work is timed outside school holidays to minimize disruption, though no completion date was given. The new escalators are part of a program to replace nine escalators and 13 lifts this year. They feature smart inverters, regenerative drives, and standby speed operators, reducing energy consumption by an impressive 40%.
The new units will automatically slow down or stop when no passengers are detected, saving up to 40% energy compared to continuous operation. LED lighting on steps and skirting is up to 80% more efficient than traditional fluorescent lights.
Customer Patience Appreciated
Bosses thanked visitors for their patience, promising the upgrades will be worth the wait. Guest Services are available to direct guests to nearby lifts and stairs. The work is being done on all three units simultaneously to reduce disruption.
The upgrades come alongside new openings including Uniqlo, Frurt frozen yoghurt, Dave's Hot Chicken, and fitness brands Garage and Lululemon.
