Three home changes to keep your house cooler next summer
Three home changes to keep your house cooler next summer

As the UK endures a hot summer, many households are struggling to keep their homes cool. While simple hacks like running fans and keeping windows closed during the day can help, the Energy Saving Trust has outlined three more permanent improvements that could make a difference next year.

Insulation, solar film, and heat pumps

The Trust, in a dedicated webpage, suggested topping up insulation, adding solar film to windows, and installing an air-to-air heat pump. These measures aim to reduce indoor temperatures during heatwaves.

On insulation, the Trust said: "Home insulation works in a similar way to a thermal mug or flask. Insulation slows the rate that heat escapes, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Typical costs for wall, floor and loft or roof insulation depend on your home and the type of insulation you’re installing."

Prioritise sun-facing windows

For solar film, the experts noted that not all windows need covering. A cheaper solution is to focus on south-facing windows, which receive the most sunlight. The Trust said: "Adding solar film to your windows will help reduce the heating effect of sunlight shining through the glass. Costs vary depending on the film you choose as well as the size and number of windows you want to cover."

They added: "If you decide not to cover all of your windows, prioritise the ones that get the most sunlight. These include south-facing windows, or those in rooms that get the warmest."

Air-to-air heat pumps

The final suggestion is air-to-air heat pumps, which act as air-conditioning units that heat in winter and cool in summer. The Trust noted these are more common in Europe than the UK, but "as we see more frequent heatwaves and generally hotter summers, they may become a more common sight."

In the meantime, the Trust advises keeping homes cool by closing windows and curtains during the day, opening windows only when there is cool air, staying in shaded rooms, and limiting oven use.
