New images have been released showing the transformed Castle Square Gardens in Swansea city centre, featuring copper and stone pavilions, trees, a water feature, and a large screen.
Design and Features
The two pavilions, described as cafe-friendly by Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart, are part of the redevelopment. The square at the top of Wind Street will include more greenery than before, including on top of the pavilions. Contractor Knights Brown, which built the new Mumbles seawall and promenade, began work this year.
Local Business Reactions
Lucy Shellard, owner of Prom Heaven UK, expressed excitement about the project, noting it would be good for photo shoots and bring business. Mohammed Abdulla, owner of Velvet Green Cafe, hoped it would attract more people to the area. An employee at another cafe welcomed the return of greenery, citing benefits for mental health.

Council leader Rob Stewart said: “The images offer an exciting glimpse of what people can look forward to. They showcase a greener, more welcoming city centre destination.” He highlighted the pavilions, outdoor screen, and playful water feature. Friedrich Ludewig, founding director of architects ACME, noted the site's history as the Ben Evans store location and later Castle Gardens, and said the works will increase tree coverage and green planting.
Budget and Timeline
A council report from March indicated a £13.4 million budget for the project spread over three years. The new-look site is expected to open in the second half of 2027.
