Ripe avocados stay fresh for '2 weeks' with fridge trick

Ripe avocados can stay fresh and green for up to two weeks if stored in the fridge crisper drawer, according to waste management specialists at Wheeldon Brothers.

Avocados are a household staple for countless shoppers, often eaten at breakfast alongside eggs and toast, and used in salads and smoothies. Yet one of the most common challenges consumers face is storing them properly to prevent them from going off.

Why refrigeration extends ripeness

The longevity of the fruit depends on factors including its ripeness at purchase and storage methods, though it typically lasts between three and seven days at room temperature. The specialists said: "Avocados are one of the most wasted foods because of their speedy ripening process."

"But refrigerating fully ripe avocados can extend their freshness for up to two weeks, reducing their chances of going brown." It is crucial to transfer them to the fridge only after they have become softer and riper, as placing an unripe avocado in the fridge can take weeks to soften.

Where to place them

Ideally, place the avocado in the crisper drawer — the drawer at the bottom of the fridge — though any clean and stable shelf will suffice if space is limited.

Keeping cut avocados fresh

Once sliced, avocados are susceptible to browning because of a natural enzyme that reacts with oxygen. The specialists advised: "Coating the flesh with lemon or lime juice helps keep it fresh and green. The acidity slows oxidation, preserving both the colour and texture. It's a simple trick that makes a big difference."

Freezing for longer storage

Freezing represents one option for prolonging the fruit's shelf life, though it is not suited to every purpose. The professionals explained: "Freezing avocados can keep them fresh for up to four months. However, the texture can change after thawing, so frozen avocados work best for recipes where they'll be mashed or blended."

"If freezing, cut them into chunks or slices and store them in an airtight bag." Purchasing avocados based on when you intend to use them can also help minimise waste. If you are not planning to consume them immediately, buy firm ones and allow them to ripen naturally at room temperature. The waste specialists observed: "Once they're ripe, refrigerate them to extend their freshness. This way, you can better control their ripening and avoid throwing them out too soon."
