Oven-baked French toast: the easier method that beats frying
Oven-baked French toast: the easier method that beats frying

French toast can be made in the oven instead of on the hob, offering a simpler method that delivers evenly cooked, crispy results without the mess of frying. The technique, shared by Michelle, founder of Now Cook This, allows a large batch to be prepared at once with no need for constant supervision.

Why the oven beats the frying pan

Frying French toast on the hob can be laborious, with oil splashing across kitchen surfaces and the bread often burning on the outside while remaining undercooked and soggy in the middle. Preparing it in the oven avoids these problems entirely.

Michelle said: "The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was. It's been my go-to ever since. And I'd be willing to bet that, once you try it, it'll become yours too!"

Even cooking and no mess

Baking French toast ensures every part of the bread is cooked evenly, creating a crispy texture without burning or leaving the centre raw. It also means no splattered hob or burnt frying pan to scour afterwards, making it a more convenient option for a relaxed morning.

How to make oven-baked French toast

To make the dish, you will need eight slices of brioche bread, four large eggs, 240ml of whole milk, one teaspoon of vanilla extract, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, a pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon), butter (optional), maple syrup (optional), and cooking spray.

Start by preheating the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7), then liberally coat a large sheet pan tray with cooking spray. Break the eggs into a medium-sized bowl, add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt, and whisk until fully combined.

Pour the egg mixture into the tray, then place the bread slices in a single layer on top. Allow the bread to sit for one minute to soak up the moisture, then turn it over. Leave for a few minutes until all of the egg batter has been completely absorbed.

Place the tray in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is crispy and golden. Serve immediately straight from the oven, drizzling with butter, maple syrup, or any other toppings of your choice.
