Curtains often go unnoticed when it comes to home cleaning, even though they collect dust, pet hair, and everyday grime over time. They can also gather pollen if windows are opened frequently, which is not ideal for allergy sufferers. While a proper wash is one way to freshen them, taking down bulky curtains and fitting them into the washing machine can be a hassle. Fortunately, a full wash cycle is not always necessary to refresh them.
Hillarys has shared simple alternative cleaning methods that help remove dust, odours, and dirt without washing. The company said: “With the right care and maintenance, you can keep your curtains looking as good as the day they were fitted. All our curtains are dry clean only, but there are other ways to keep your curtains looking great for longer.”
Vacuum them
The “easiest” way to clean curtains is to vacuum them with the soft-bristle attachment, which is often designed for furniture and upholstery. Doing this regularly can help keep them free of dust and pet hair that accumulates over time.
The expert said: “Start by closing your curtains fully, then gently brush the attachment over the front of the curtains. You’ll get the best results by moving from top to bottom, paying special attention to the edges. Repeat on the linings or reverse side of your curtains. Don’t forget the bottom edges of your curtains where they meet the windowsill or floor, which collect dust.”
Steam clean and prevent mould
If curtains become creased, the best way to neaten them is to lightly steam them with a handheld steamer. The experts said: “Wait until your steamer has reached the correct heat and move it over your curtains. Start at the top and work in large sweeping movements to the bottom of the curtains. While your curtain is still slightly damp, you can finish off the look by smoothing out any creases and creating neat folds in line with how the curtains hang.”
If a room suffers from condensation on the windows, this could result in mould building up on the curtain lining. Mould is very difficult to remove without discolouring fabric, so preventative measures are advised. The experts said: “Keep your room warm and well-ventilated at all times. Simple measures such as opening a window can help reduce the spread of mould. For rooms particularly prone to dampness, invest in a dehumidifier. Replace single-glazed windows with double glazing to reduce draughts and retain heat.”
If curtains need a deeper clean, it is important to dry clean them if the material allows.
