Great Britain has banned trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) from new cosmetic products, a key ingredient in gel nail products. The ban, effective August 15, 2026, applies to England, Scotland, and Wales.
Reason for the ban and transition timeline
The ban targets new cosmetic products containing TPO due to animal studies linking it to reproductive toxicity. Gel manicure services will continue as normal, with salons able to use existing TPO stock until supplies run out, but they will not be able to buy new stock containing the ingredient.
The ingredient was already banned in the European Union since September 2025. Many professional brands have switched to TPO-free formulas in preparation for the new regulations.
Deadlines and advice for customers
Businesses have been given a clear transition timeline, with February 14, 2027, marking the final deadline for selling existing TPO stock. From February 15, 2027, TPO-containing cosmetics can no longer be sold anywhere in Britain.
Margaret Dabbs OBE, founder of Margaret Dabbs London, advises nail treatment customers to be mindful of frequency. "To minimise damage, always have gels removed professionally, give your nails regular breaks and nourish them daily," she said. Customers do not need to discard existing gel polishes and can continue receiving treatments during the transition period.
