Clare Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, has welcomed new figures showing 35,350 residents in North Lanarkshire are in receipt of the SNP Government's Council Tax Reduction scheme.
The scheme applies to people living alone, students, some people living with a disability, and some people on low incomes. Across Scotland, almost 460,000 people benefit from the discount.
Nationwide Scheme
Unlike in England, where council tax discount schemes vary between local authorities, the Scottish Council Tax Reduction Scheme applies equally across the country.
Under the SNP, Scots also pay the lowest average council tax in the UK, with the average Band D property paying £730 less a year than in England.
MSP's Response
Ms Adamson said: "It's great news that so many people in North Lanarkshire are paying less council tax than they would be without this scheme."
She added: "Council tax in Scotland is already lower on average than in England and Wales, and this discount puts more money into the pockets of those who need it most. Unlike in England, this scheme applies equally across the whole country to ensure that everyone receives the same treatment."
The MSP concluded: "The SNP is fully focused on helping people with the cost of living, and it’s absolutely right that this discount helps ensure Scotland has the best package of support anywhere on these islands."
