Frozen oven chips can be made crispier and more flavourful with a simple homemade spice mix, according to a recipe published by Tesco. The preparation takes just five minutes and uses ingredients likely already in the kitchen cupboard.
The recipe covers frozen chips in a blend of smoked paprika, sea salt flakes, dried rosemary and garlic granules before cooking. A drizzle of vegetable oil helps the chips turn golden and crispy, while the spice mix adds depth of flavour.
Five-Minute Spiced Fries Recipe
The recipe calls for 500g of frozen oven chips, vegetable oil, half a teaspoon of smoked paprika, a quarter teaspoon of sea salt flakes, half a teaspoon of dried rosemary and a quarter teaspoon of garlic granules. For those who prefer a spicier chip, a quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper can be added.
To prepare, place the oven chips on a large baking tray and drizzle with vegetable oil. Scatter the spices over the chips, then toss thoroughly to ensure every chip is evenly coated. Cook following the packet instructions.
Air Fryer Option and Homemade Alternative
The same technique can be used in an air fryer if the packet instructions allow. The hot air circulating inside the appliance may make the chips even crispier.
For those with more time, Maris Piper potatoes are recommended for homemade chips, with around 350g needed for two people. Boil them for three minutes, let them steam-dry for five minutes, then transfer to a baking tray. Drizzle with a small amount of oil and a pinch of salt, then bake in an oven preheated to 220°C (200°C fan) for 18 to 20 minutes, turning once and baking for a further eight minutes.
For sweet potato fries, rinsing is not required, though Tesco advises coating them in a little olive oil, sugar and salt before baking to enhance the flavour.
