FCDO Issues Wildfire Warning for Travellers to France
FCDO Wildfire Warning for France Travellers

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning for anyone travelling to France due to the increased risk of wildfires during the summer months. As schools prepare to break up for summer, thousands of British families are planning holidays to France, a popular destination for millions of UK tourists.

Wildfire Risk Period and Regions

The FCDO alert states: "There is a high risk of wildfires during the summer season from April to October." The warning specifically highlights that "wildfires can start anywhere in France during the summer months, particularly along the Mediterranean coast and in Corsica." The French weather service has launched a fire alert map to help travellers stay updated on current conditions.

Legal Consequences and Safety Measures

The FCDO emphasises that "causing a wildfire is illegal in France, even if it is started by accident. You could get a fine or a prison sentence." Travellers are advised to follow guidance from the French government on preventing wildfires, protecting homes (including mandatory bush clearance), and what to do if a wildfire breaks out. In an emergency, call 18 (fire) or 112 (emergency services).

Current Heatwave and Travel Advice

Temperatures are rising across Europe, with France experiencing scorching conditions. On Thursday, temperatures in the south of France are expected to reach 35°C. Paris, a popular destination for British tourists, is also facing extreme heat that will continue into next week. The FCDO advises travellers to research their destinations, get appropriate travel insurance covering planned activities and emergencies, and ensure passports meet Schengen area rules: the passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before arrival and an expiry date at least 3 months after the planned departure from the Schengen area.
