Dog Experts Settle Debate on Optimal Daily Walk Duration

Dog experts have concluded how long you should walk your dog, settling the debate for pet owners. According to The Kennel Club, every dog should have at least one walk a day, often two, but the amount of exercise varies by breed and individual needs.

Daily Exercise Recommendations

The Kennel Club stated: "Every dog should have at least one walk a day, often two, given that in some circumstances, under veterinary advice, the dog should be rested." They also noted that the Government recommends 30 minutes of exercise daily for humans, which can be achieved during a dog walk.

The amount of exercise your dog needs will vary according to its breed, but every dog should have at least one walk a day, often two.

Puppies Require Less Formal Exercise

Puppies need less "formal" exercise, and long walks can overtire them. The Kennel Club suggests a rule of thumb: "five minutes of formal exercise per month of age (up to twice a day) until the puppy is fully grown i.e., 15 minutes (up to twice a day) when three months old, 20 minutes when four months old and so on."

As dogs become older, they’ll be able to cope with larger amounts of exercise.
