Aldi: Freeze Cooked Potatoes to Stop Sprouting
Aldi: Freeze Cooked Potatoes to Stop Sprouting

Aldi has shared advice on how to keep potatoes from sprouting: cook them first and then freeze them. The supermarket partnered with food waste storage expert Kate Hall to offer tips on preserving staple foods like milk, bananas, and potatoes.

Research Highlights Food Waste Problem

Research by Aldi found that the average British person discards £387 worth of food annually, and 70% admit to buying food they expect to throw away. Kate Hall noted that roughly 4.4 million potatoes are wasted daily in the UK.

Storage Advice from the Expert

Kate explained that storing potatoes in the fridge can make them last up to three times longer. If fridge space is limited, a cool, dark place is acceptable, but they should be kept away from onions, which accelerate sprouting, and moisture from potatoes can cause onions to go mouldy.

For potatoes that won't be used in time, freezing is recommended. Raw potatoes cannot be frozen, but cooked batches—like baked potatoes, roasties, or mash—can be frozen once cooled and reheated straight from frozen until piping hot.

Aldi's Commitment to Reducing Waste

Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said: “At Aldi, we’re committed to reducing food waste wherever we can across our supply chain, whether that be working with suppliers to cut down on waste, or marking down prices of items nearing their sell by date. Now we’re on a mission to help shoppers minimise their food waste too, while getting even more value from their Aldi groceries at the same time. It seems simple, but the research shows that freezing items still isn’t something many do – so we want to showcase just how easy that can be.”
