Lifeguard in Critical Condition After Vicious Shark Attack

A popular beach in Hawaii became the scene of a horrific shark attack that has left a dedicated lifeguard fighting for his life. Chance Swanson, 33, was viciously mauled by a tiger shark while surfing in the waters of Hanalei Bay, Kauai, on November 5, 2025.

The respected surfer and lifeguard was found unconscious and floating in the water, surrounded by a large pool of blood, prompting a swift and dramatic rescue operation by his colleagues.

Dramatic Rescue and Serious Injuries

The terrifying incident was first spotted by fellow lifeguards using binoculars. Kalani Vierra, the Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau Chief, described the chilling moment they realised their colleague was in grave danger.

"The lifeguards looked with the binoculars and noticed that Chance was floating on his back with a big red stain around him," Vierra stated. "They went out immediately, and obviously they noticed that he was attacked by a shark, and they put on a tourniquet right away."

Their quick thinking and first aid were crucial in stabilising Swanson, who had sustained severe injuries to his leg. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A Long Road to Recovery and Community Support

Facing an uncertain and challenging recovery, Swanson's family has turned to the public for support. His mother, Rose Keaweamahi-Hoovler, has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover her son's mounting medical expenses.

She described her son as a "well-respected lifeguard and surfer, and one of the humblest people you will ever meet." She added that he "embodies the true spirit of Aloha, and is a shining star, always happy and smiling."

On the fundraising page, she expressed the family's gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers, but noted that doctors are predicting a "long road to recovery." The community is now rallying to support one of their own in his fight for life.
