Peace lilies will be bursting with blooms if you do 5-second task in October

Peace lilies will bloom abundantly if you move them to a brighter spot with indirect sunlight in October, a five-second task that boosts flowering.

Why October light matters

Peace lilies are among the most popular houseplants, known for their air-purifying qualities, lush dark-green foliage and delicate white blooms. However, getting them to flower can be a common dilemma. The remedy is simple: peace lily owners need to ensure the plant’s care needs are met, but in October, one of the biggest hindrances is the light, or lack thereof.

Peace lilies need to be moved this month to an area of indirect sunlight, something most kitchens offer, according to the gardening experts at Happy Houseplants. The kitchen is an ideal space for the plant.

More light for more flowers

Peace lilies are often chosen for their ability to tolerate low light, but this is something they survive, not a desirable growing situation. To get peace lilies to “produce more flowers”, the experts said: “The answer is more light. Although spathiphyllums (peace lilies) are tolerant of low light, to encourage flowering, we recommend moving the plant to a brighter location with plenty of indirect sunlight.

“One of the most important factors is where you decide to place it in your home. A spot where the houseplant looks great, but also gives the peace lily sufficient sunlight and humidity.

“This can be near east- or west-facing windows, but not too near these windows, as draughts and radiator heat can damage the houseplant, causing it to wilt. The best room we recommend for placing your peace lily is a steamy kitchen.”

Light requirements and recovery

Peace lilies thrive in an adequate (low to moderate) amount of bright, indirect sunlight. While they can adapt to different light conditions, they flourish best when placed in a location with filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight exposure, as it may lead to leaf burn. Striking this balance ensures “vibrant, healthy growth” and encourages the elegant white blooms that make peace lilies captivating, says the houseplants experts at Lively Root.

A healthy peace lily boasts vibrant green leaves, attractive flowers, and sturdy stems, creating an overall robust appearance. In optimal conditions, the plant will consistently produce the elegant white blooms that define its beauty.

Peace lilies are not well-suited to full sun exposure. While they thrive in bright, indirect light, direct sunlight can be detrimental to the plant. Too much sun can lead to scorched leaves, resulting in unsightly brown spots and overall stress to the plant. Brown flowers on your peace lily are also a sign of overexposure to sunlight.

To revive a peace lily stressed by too much sun, move it to a shaded area with filtered light. Then, trim any damaged or scorched leaves, allowing the plant to redirect its energy to producing healthy foliage. Adjust the plant’s placement gradually to prevent shock and ensure consistent watering to support recovery.
