South Ayrshire Council is appealing to the public to collect any personal mementos, memorial items and keepsakes attached to or placed on and around a tree near the Fairy Trail at Fullarton Estate, Troon, ahead of planned works to restore and protect the area.
The tree has become a place of remembrance, reflection and celebration, where people have left memorial tributes including photographs, plaques, toys, pet collars, children's dummies and baby bottles. For many families, these items commemorate loved ones, hold special memories and mark important moments in their lives.
Why the items are being removed
Over the years, the items attached to the tree have accumulated significantly, resulting in damage to the tree and the surrounding area. In addition to the damage, some of the items are showing signs of deterioration and are consequently potential safety hazards to both children and wildlife.
To address these concerns while preserving the site's importance, a council spokesperson said: "We recognise the importance the site holds therefore, to help preserve both the environment and the opportunity for remembrance, a memorial postbox has now been installed in the surrounding area. The postbox will offer a dedicated place to leave notes and small memorial tributes without causing harm to trees, wildlife or the wider estate."
Deadline for collecting items
Members of the public who wish to retrieve any items previously placed at the site are asked to collect them by Monday 9 November 2026. After this date, any remaining items attached to the tree or left within the surrounding area will be carefully removed and disposed of appropriately.
Councillor Alec Clark, Depute Leader and Commercial/Operational Services Policy Lead for South Ayrshire Council, said: "We understand the strong emotional connection that this site holds for many. This decision has been made with the greatest care and consideration so as not to diminish the memories associated with the items or the site itself."
"We hope that by introducing the new memorial postbox, loved ones can continue to be remembered while protecting the estate and wildlife for future generations to enjoy. I would like to thank the public for their understanding while we work to enhance the area."
