Homemade peppermint spray 'actually works' to repel spiders

UK households facing a rise in spider sightings this September, as mating season peaks, may find relief in a homemade repellent that a content creator says "actually works". The method uses peppermint oil and water, and is claimed to deter spiders without harming them.

How the homemade spider spray works

Content creator @home.on.the.glade demonstrated the technique in a TikTok video, revealing: "I hate spiders and after using this spray I didn't see any!" She clarified: "Don't worry, it doesn't kill the spiders, it just repels them because they hate the smell."

She recommended mixing 15-20 drops of peppermint oil into a spray bottle of water, then applying the solution "along skirting boards, window frames and door ways," or any other areas where spiders might enter the home.

Safety warning for pet owners

The content creator offered a warning: "Just remember peppermint essential oils are toxic to pets when wet. It is safe when dry, but please just be careful if you have dogs and cats."

According to Green Pest Solutions, spiders have an aversion to peppermint because they "taste" through their legs, making it a natural deterrent. However, most essential oils, including tea tree, peppermint, citrus oils, lavender, eucalyptus and clove, pose a danger to cats and dogs. If a pet comes into contact with essential oil, veterinary advice should be sought immediately.

Alternative spider deterrents and prevention

For pet owners, alternatives include mixing equal parts vinegar and water and spraying it in common spider spots, or rubbing lemon peel along windowsills, skirting boards and shelves.

Experts at Pest UK previously recommended keeping windows shut at night and sealing gaps in walls, pipework, doors, door frames and windows. Keeping a tidy home, with clean windowsills free of cobwebs and debris, can also reduce spider entry.
