Firefighters tackled a blaze that destroyed multiple structures at a community garden in Hackney, east London, on Wednesday night. Four fire engines and 25 firefighters rushed to the scene on Graham Road at around 10.30pm.
Crews bring fire under control
London Fire Brigade (LFB) crews from Homerton, Bethnal Green and Stoke Newington had the fire under control by 11.57pm. Images posted on social media showed flames illuminating surrounding buildings as crews worked to contain the blaze.
Several allotments and structures were destroyed, and a shed on the site suffered partial damage. There have been no reports of any injuries.
Cause believed accidental
LFB said the fire is believed to have been accidental, most likely caused by an electrical event in an electricity meter. The site, believed to be the Garden of Earthly Delights, also acts as an educational grassroots project.
On its website, the garden says it “hosts talks, skill shares and workshops”, as well as providing “volunteering and eco therapy opportunities.” The garden has been contacted for comment.
