Six fire engines were called to a metal recycling centre on Birch Street, Bury, after a major fire broke out at around 12.30am on Tuesday, October 6.
Residents near Bury town centre were urged to keep windows and doors closed as plumes of smoke billowed from the blaze. Firefighters used an aerial platform to extinguish the fire.
Police and road closures
Police also attended the scene and put road closures in place. People were urged to avoid the area due to the smoke.
The fire was extinguished, and crews left the scene after around six hours. Police also left the scene later on Tuesday morning.

In a statement issued at 7.45am, a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 00:30am this morning (Tuesday 6 October), six fire engines from across Greater Manchester were called to reports of a fire at a metal recycling centre on Birch Street, Bury. Crews arrived quickly and worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe, using specialist equipment to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were in attendance for around 6 hours."
