A serene nature reserve that provided the enchanting backdrop for CS Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia has become the scene of a tragic discovery, after the body of a man was found in the woodland that inspired the magical world.
Thames Valley Police were called to the CS Lewis Nature Reserve in Risinghurst, Oxford, on Tuesday afternoon following reports of concern for a person's welfare. Officers discovered the body of a man believed to be in his seventies.
The force has confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious, but investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
The Magical Connection to Narnia
The woodland holds particular significance to literary enthusiasts worldwide, as it served as direct inspiration for Lewis's fictional realm of Narnia. The author frequently walked through these very woods while teaching at Oxford University's Magdalen College, drawing inspiration from the ancient trees and peaceful pathways.
Local residents have expressed their shock at the tragedy occurring in what many consider a place of beauty and tranquillity. The reserve, maintained by the local council, remains popular with walkers, families, and literary pilgrims seeking to experience the landscape that sparked Lewis's imagination.
Police Investigation Continues
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson stated: "We were called to a report of concern for a person's welfare in the area of the CS Lewis Nature Reserve. Very sadly, the body of a man in his seventies was found. The death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious."
"A file will be prepared for the coroner as investigations continue to establish the circumstances around this incident."
The area surrounding the nature reserve was temporarily closed to the public while police conducted their initial investigations, but has since reopened to the community.
