Bill Oddie, the beloved wildlife presenter and former Springwatch star, has died aged 85, his family announced on Saturday, July 25. Known for his passion for birding, Oddie often shared tips to encourage wildlife into gardens. In a 2014 interview with Haiths' Simon H. King, he listed his three favourite plants for attracting birds: Hawthorn, Rowan, and Mahonia.
Hawthorn
According to the RHS, Hawthorn provides excellent wildlife habitat with nectar-rich flowers for insects and autumn berries (haws) that feed birds. It can be grown as hedges, shrubs, or trees and thrives in various soils and exposed conditions.
Rowan
Also known as Mountain Ash, Rowan is a berry-bearing shrub that attracts birds. The RSPB's Robert McDowell noted that birds often squabble over the best branches. The name comes from Scots Gaelic, meaning 'red one'.
Mahonia
The RHS describes Mahonia as having striking clusters of orange-red buds that open to yellow blooms rich in nectar for pollinators. As flowers fade, blue-grey berries develop, providing a valuable food source for birds.
Oddie's agent, David Foster, announced his death: 'It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Bill Oddie, the country’s best-loved birder... He taught us the wonder of it... Such a massive contribution to conservation will never be forgotten.'
