A household and gardening specialist claims one straightforward method could help eliminate fruit flies from your property. These nuisances can rapidly multiply as they breed quickly in suitable environments and are particularly drawn to ripening and fermenting fruit, sweet liquids and other damp organic material.
Daily lawn checks and grass cover
According to Andy Simms of Mybuilder.com, the dependable platform for hiring tradespeople, fruit flies can develop into a significant infestation within mere days, though there are techniques that can help prevent them.
He shared: "They're also prone to entering into our homes and can easily do so through tiny gaps around our windows and doors. To keep these pests away, your best bet is to regularly check that your lawn is clear of any fallen fruit by checking your lawn once a day."
Andy explained that if you discover fruit requiring disposal, it shouldn't be left on top of your compost bin, as this can still draw unwanted pests. To help conceal the waste, you can use grass already in your garden.
Vinegar trap and sealing entry points
"You'll do a much more effective job of keeping them away if you cover fruit up with grass," he added. Should the pests remain problematic after implementing this, Andy recommended creating an apple cider vinegar trap, reports the Express.
According to TheKitchn.com, the technique involves taking a jar and punching a few tiny holes in the lid (or you can use cling film). They suggest filling the jar with a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar and several drops of washing-up liquid. Once positioned, they claim the fruit flies will come flocking.
Andy continued: "At the same time, it may be worth checking for, and sealing, entry points into your home, as well as looking for hidden sources of moisture, such as in your drains and plant pots. These places are especially where pesky fruit flies love to lay eggs!"
Kitchen cleanliness and bin maintenance
According to Good Food, maintaining cleanliness, especially in the kitchen, should also be prioritised when attempting to eliminate fruit flies. They recommend storing fresh produce in suitable locations immediately upon bringing it home, while properly discarding anything that is past its best.
They also suggest washing up immediately, particularly during warm weather and if something fruity has been consumed from your cup or bowl. The website states that the sink should be kept spotless right down into the drain, recommending pouring a kettle of boiling water down the plughole to eliminate any eggs or larvae that might be residing there.
Bins should also be emptied frequently, especially food waste caddies, while kitchen cloths should be put through the washing machine to ensure they receive a thorough clean, the website noted.
