A terrifying point-of-view video has captured the moment a group of workers ran for their lives after narrowly escaping a massive flash flood in Nepal. The footage shows a huge rush of water tearing through the mountains as people scramble to safety.
Rescuers are continuing to search for survivors after the US Geological Survey said a ‘glacial collapse’ triggered the wall of water and mud that tore through Nepal and Tibet. More than 800 people are still said to be missing, and at least 270 have died in Nepal. In Tibet, just under 600 people are missing, with three confirmed dead.
Video shows desperate escape
In the clip, ‘Oh my God, oh my God’ can be heard being repeated by the person filming the flooding, before he himself turns and runs up a hill. As the workers flee, the sound of crashing waves can be heard in the background as the water continues to rush through the mountain. Towards the end of the clip, a loud bang is heard as each person finally makes their way to safety.
UK pledges £5 million in aid
In the wake of the devastation, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said that the UK has pledged £5 million to help with the response effort. ‘It’s a devastating picture that is emerging from what has happened in Nepal,’ Burnham said during a visit to South Wales. ‘Immediate action [is being taken] so that British nationals will be able to access support 24/7.’
So far, it is believed that 33 UK nationals are currently missing. Burnham added: ‘Obviously, there are a number of British nationals who currently are thought to be missing and we’ll be providing all the support we can to their families in what is a very distressing and devastating situation.’ The PM also said that the UK has offered to send emergency responders to the region, but ‘that’s obviously a matter for the Nepalese government’.
