Wildfires have ravaged parts of Europe, with France and Spain experiencing some of the most extreme fires on record. In the Gironde region near Bordeaux, tens of thousands of hectares have burned, creating what the region's chief administrator called an unpredictable "thunderstorm of fire." More than 200,000 people have been displaced in the largest peacetime evacuations in France's history. Dozens of firefighters have been injured.
Fires Merge Near Madrid
In Spain, multiple fires merged on the outskirts of Madrid, creating what has been described as the largest fire in Spain's history. The blaze burned more than triple the hectares of an average July, as another heatwave menaces the country. Scientists attribute the fires to "weather whiplash" from the accelerating climate crisis. Similar fires have been reported from Sicily to Norway.
US Climate Policy Criticized
Across the Atlantic, smoke from Canadian boreal forest fires has obscured US skies. Some US politicians have proposed sanctions on Canada rather than offering aid. An opinion piece by Alexander Hurst in The Guardian argues that the United States, as the largest historical emitter of carbon, bears significant responsibility for the climate crisis. Hurst notes that the US has consistently undermined international climate agreements, including withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, and under Donald Trump's second term has pursued increased fossil fuel use with "heinous glee."
Proposal for EU Sanctions
Hurst suggests that Europe should use the power of the single market to respond to what he calls US "ecological warfare." Proposed measures include extending the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to all sectors, strengthening the carbon border tax, imposing tariffs on US goods and services with easy substitutes, and placing export taxes on materials used in US production. The revenue could be earmarked for global decarbonization and adaptation. Hurst argues that such economic responses are necessary to safeguard Europe's political and economic future, coordinated with other actors including China.
