Wildfire Size of 500 Football Pitches Came Metres from Homes

Devastating images from Llanwonno in the Rhondda show how a wildfire, burning for days, came dangerously close to engulfing homes in the valley below. The blaze has spread to an area larger than 500 football pitches, with scorched earth visible just metres from properties in the village of Blaenllechau.

No evacuations but rest centre set up

No homes have been evacuated, but a rest centre was set up earlier this week to support those affected by smoke. A major incident was declared due to the strain on fire resources. A specialist firefighting helicopter arrived on Wednesday to assist South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) in controlling the blaze.

Fire contained but resources remain

According to the latest SWFRS update, the wildfire covers approximately 400 hectares, equivalent to over 500 football pitches. It is described as "contained," but significant resources remain on scene for monitoring and containment. The fire service reported that nearby properties remain protected, and specialist resources, including ground crews and NRW tractors with water bowsers, continue to support the response.

Deliberate fire-setting reported

Reports of deliberate fire-setting on the mountain emerged earlier this week, despite the flames already burning. South Wales Police officers are patrolling the area, and the fire crime team is involved. The public is urged to report any deliberate fire-setting to police on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Public safety measures

Road diversions remain in place, and motorists are asked to follow diversion routes. The public is urged to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed to minimize smoke exposure. Drones must not be flown near the incident, as they pose a risk to aerial firefighting operations.

Photographer John Myers captured the aftermath, showing the fire's proximity to homes and the extensive scorched land. Crews are expected to remain at Llanwonno for days to monitor and control the situation.
