Vira Digwa, 38, from Cheadle, has transformed her life by lifting weights, shedding 30lbs and conquering comfort eating without resorting to weight loss jabs. After the birth of her son Kai in 2023, she struggled with confidence, diabetes, and an overactive thyroid, turning to food for comfort.
"I lost all my confidence, and I lost the ability to find time for myself. And I couldn't find my way back," Vira said. She felt "vulnerable" and "unworthy," often binge-eating biscuits and chocolate after short-lived health kicks.
Turning Point and Weight Training
The tipping point came when Vira saw photos from a night out and didn't recognize herself. Her husband Sonny, a member of Ultimate Performance gym in Manchester, suggested weight training. She joined in December 2024 at a UK size 16, following a fitness and nutritional plan. One year later, she dropped to a size 8/10.
"I'd never lifted weights before, and I did find the first few months hard," Vira said. After six weeks, she noticed changes in appearance, health, and mindset. Trainer Nelea helped her open up and prioritize herself.
Overcoming Comfort Eating
Weight training replaced the urge to comfort eat. "I used to turn to food because it was the only thing I found comforting," Vira explained. "By lifting weights, and eating a clean diet, it taught me that I could do positive things for myself rather than just turning to a bag of crisps or cake."
Her diet shifted from skipped breakfasts and junk food to high-protein meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She now understands macronutrients and eats to satisfy physical cravings, not emotions. "I still have a cookie now and again," she said, "but knowing there is a limit."
Health Benefits and New Mindset
Weight training helped lower her insulin levels and manage her overactive thyroid, reversing issues she thought were myths. "I could see my arms becoming more toned, but I also started to feel stronger," Vira said. "My core felt stronger. My back felt better."
Vira now feels "strong, confident, and full of life." She credits Nelea for helping her find lost strength. "I know I have to make my health a priority for the rest of my life," she said, "for my physical and mental health, and for Kai."
