Vinegar and Peppermint Oil: Natural Rat Deterrent, Say Pest Experts
Vinegar and Peppermint Oil Deter Rats, Say Pest Experts

Pest control experts say white vinegar alone won't keep rats away from your property, but pairing it with one natural item—peppermint oil—can be effective. Rats are among the most frustrating, dangerous, and common pest species in the UK, with numbers rising in almost every urban area. These rodents can destroy property once inside, gnawing through walls, furniture, food, and other materials.

Signs of Rats and Natural Deterrents

Droppings, dirt trails, gnaw marks, and musty ammonia smells are telltale signs of rats in a home. While chemical rodent sprays are available, they are not the safest method. Many natural deterrents exist, but they don't all work on their own. White vinegar is often suggested as a remedy, but it needs to be paired with something else to see positive effects, according to the pros at Petti Pest Control.

Expert Advice on Vinegar and Peppermint Oil

The pest control experts said: “Vinegar works by masking smells and oils, which will deter rats and mice from entering an area or chewing on any material. However, it needs to be used with other methods since vinegar by itself will not keep rodents away from your home.” They noted that vinegar must be combined with peppermint oil to be effective.

The experts added: “Peppermint oil can be used to deter rodents from entering an area. They don't like the smell and therefore won't come into your home. It is not a good idea to use peppermint oil by itself, but in combination with other methods such as vinegar, it can be effective at keeping them out of your home and yard.”

Specialists at Titan Pest Pro also recommended the combination. They said: “White vinegar’s sharp, acidic smell can discourage rats from frequenting certain areas. Peppermint oil is one of the most popular natural rat repellents — and for good reason. Rats have a highly sensitive sense of smell, and the strong menthol aroma of peppermint overwhelms their nasal passages. This causes discomfort and confusion, making them avoid areas treated with this scent.”

How to Apply and Other Prevention Tips

Soak cotton balls in vinegar and peppermint oil and place them near suspected points of entry, such as behind appliances or in attics. Refresh them every three to four days as the scent fades.

Other effective deterrents include sealing gaps in the foundation or flooring, keeping areas clean and clear of clutter that provides food, water, and shelter, and ensuring drain inspection covers are in good repair with disused pipes sealed off.
