UK Set for Another Hot Weekend as Temperatures Could Reach 30C
Temperatures are expected to rise sharply this weekend, potentially hitting the 30 degrees Celsius mark again just two weeks after a record-breaking heatwave, according to the Met Office. The UK is currently experiencing unsettled weather with rain and showers affecting most regions through Friday, but conditions are set to change dramatically.
Dan Stroud, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "We're looking at temperatures climbing into the weekend, particularly on Saturday and Sunday, so feeling much warmer than recent days, with temperatures quite widely above average, especially across the south come Saturday, and even more so on Sunday." The seasonal average for southern England is around 21C.
Current indicators suggest temperatures might reach or even exceed the 30C barrier. "How high the temperatures get is still open to a fair amount of debate," Mr Stroud added. "There is growing signal that temperatures will be heading comfortably into the high 20s, perhaps breaking 30 degrees again. There is definitely a chance of temperatures scraping into the above 30 degrees on Sunday, and then more so on Monday."
The shift is due to a change in the jet stream, which is currently driving unsettled Atlantic weather fronts across the UK. By the end of this week, high pressure will build from the south, bringing clearing skies and rising temperatures. "It's just a perfect recipe for temperatures to actually start climbing," Mr Stroud said.
The south and southeast of England are likely to experience the highest temperatures over the weekend. However, more unsettled weather is expected in the meantime, with Tuesday bringing sunny spells and showers, and heavy thundery showers possible in the north. Thursday is likely to be the wettest day of the week, with an organised band of rain moving across the country, before conditions turn drier from the south on Friday.
This comes after a record-breaking heatwave on May 26, which became the hottest day in May on record for both England and Wales, with 35.1C measured at Kew Gardens and 32.9C at Cardiff Bute Park.
