UK plastic wet wipe ban rollout dates confirmed for all nations
UK plastic wet wipe ban rollout dates confirmed

A ban on single-use wet wipes containing plastic is set to roll out across the UK starting from December. The ban marks a significant shift in how people cleanse, remove cosmetics, and care for babies.

The new laws target a major cause of environmental pollution, as plastic wet wipes do not break down when flushed. Countless plastic fibres from discarded wipes accumulate in sewerage networks, forming infamous "fatbergs", and contaminating ocean habitats when flushed away.

Dates vary across the four nations

As environmental policy is administered separately by each devolved government, the measures will come into force on varying dates throughout the regions. Once the deadlines pass, retailers will not be allowed to sell or supply traditional plastic-based single-use wipes.

  • Wales: December 18, 2026
  • Northern Ireland: May 18, 2027
  • England: May 19, 2027
  • Scotland: August 11, 2027

The restriction covers everyday items such as baby wipes, facial cleansing sheets, household cleaning wipes, and moist toilet tissues.

What products are affected

The ban applies to the online and in-store sale or supply of plastic-containing items including baby wipes, toddler wipes, makeup removal wipes, face wipes, cosmetic face sheet masks, moist toilet tissue, antibacterial hand wipes, deodorant and body wipes, intimate hygiene wipes, household cleaning wipes, and wet-mop wipes.

Shoppers will still be able to buy reusable alternatives and single-use wipes made strictly from biodegradable, plastic-free materials such as bamboo or plant fibres.

Exemptions and penalties

The legislation includes some exemptions. Plastic-containing wipes will still be allowed for professional medical treatment, industrial manufacturing, and laboratory use. Although high-street shops will not be allowed to display them, registered pharmacies will be allowed to supply them over the counter to people who require them for specific health needs. The exemption exists because plastic fibres give wipes unique properties, such as high durability, chemical compatibility, and superior moisture retention, that are critical in specific care scenarios.

The government is advising businesses to prepare for the upcoming ban by reviewing their inventories. Selling banned stock after the regional deadlines could result in hefty financial penalties.
