UK Matches 1976 Heatwave: 30°C Days Equal Record

The UK has matched the infamous summer of 1976 for the number of days with temperatures exceeding 30°C, according to the Met Office. As the country experiences its third heatwave of the season, Monday saw temperatures peak at 30.1°C in Hurn, Dorset, marking the ninth consecutive day above 30°C. This brings the total number of 30°C-plus days in 2026 to 24: seven in May, eight in June, and nine in July. That equals the count for the whole of 1976, a year remembered for severe drought and water shortages.

Record-Breaking Heat and Climate Change

With six weeks of summer remaining, 2026 could surpass the record of 34 days above 30°C set in 1995. Already, this year has seen six separate days with temperatures of 35°C or higher, and a record nine days above 34°C. Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves to human-caused climate change, primarily from burning fossil fuels. The extreme heat has renewed calls for the UK to achieve net-zero emissions to halt rising temperatures.

Impact on Services and Infrastructure

The heatwaves have disrupted schools, transport, and health services, prompting demands for the government to adapt infrastructure to a hotter world, including installing air conditioning in hospitals and care homes. Fire crews have battled wildfires across England and Wales, including in County Durham. Seven English regions are under yellow heat-health alerts until Friday.

North East Misses Out on Latest Heatwave

While southern and central England brace for highs of 33°C on Wednesday, the North East is experiencing milder conditions. The Met Office forecasts cloudy mornings with brighter afternoons, remaining largely dry but breezy along the coast. Temperatures are expected to be around average or slightly above. This respite follows a busy weekend for North East beaches during the previous heatwave.

August Outlook Uncertain

Forecasters remain uncertain whether another heatwave will arrive in August. The North East may enjoy a brief reprieve, but the potential for further extreme heat remains, as climate change continues to drive more frequent and intense summer temperatures.
