Saharan Dust Cloud Poses Health Risk as It Heads to UK

A Saharan dust cloud that has turned skies orange over Spain is expected to reach the UK, potentially affecting millions of people with respiratory conditions. The dust, caused by Storm Celia lifting sand from the Sahara, has already led to 'extremely unfavourable' air quality ratings in parts of Spain.

Weather forecaster Phil Morrish told Express.co.uk that the dust will create 'spectacular sunsets' in the UK over the next few days. He noted that car owners might notice a film of dust on their vehicles, particularly after rain.

Dr Andy Whittamore, Clinical Lead at Asthma UK, warned that the dust could pose a serious risk to the 5.4 million people with asthma in the UK. He advised those affected to carry their reliever inhaler and continue using their preventer inhaler to reduce airway inflammation.

In Spain, authorities have advised wearing masks outdoors and avoiding prolonged outdoor activities, especially for those with respiratory issues. The dust cloud is moving north with southerly winds and is expected to affect the UK in the coming days.
