Newcastle Fans Allegedly Assaulted by Police After Marseille Defeat
Newcastle United are preparing an official complaint to UEFA concerning what the club describes as the "unacceptable treatment" of their supporters by French police. The incident occurred after Tuesday night's Champions League fixture, where the Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat against Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome.
Controlled Exit Turns Chaotic
According to the club's detailed statement, the trouble began after a planned safety operation. Travelling fans were held inside the stadium for approximately one hour following the final whistle. The initial plan involved escorting groups of 500 supporters to the metro station to reach a designated meeting point.
However, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Newcastle claims that once the first group was released, French police began using "unnecessary and disproportionate force" to prevent the remaining fans from proceeding. The club alleges this was carried out with pepper spray, batons, and shields, leading to numerous supporters being "indiscriminately assaulted."
Distress and Crushing in the Away Sector
The statement further describes a scene of panic and distress, particularly in the upper concourse of the away sector where crushing became apparent. Newcastle's own stewards and senior staff, who witnessed the events firsthand, immediately intervened with the police, but reported that their efforts had limited impact on the "excessive tactics" being employed.
Fans leaving the stadium shared their "distress, frustration and anger" with club officials. Newcastle has since received what it calls "deeply concerning witness reports" from those in attendance, reinforcing the club's decision to take formal action.
Formal Complaints and Investigation
Newcastle United has confirmed it will raise its concerns formally with UEFA, Olympique de Marseille, and the French police. The club is urging for a full investigation into the incident "to ensure lessons are learned and this behaviour is not repeated."
Emphasising that supporter safety and welfare should always be paramount, the club has strongly condemned the police's actions and is encouraging affected fans to share their accounts of the experience to support the official complaint.
