UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions Decline by 3% in 2024, Official Data Shows
The United Kingdom has recorded a significant reduction in its climate-warming pollution, with the latest Government figures confirming a 3% fall in greenhouse gas emissions during 2024. This decline marks continued progress in the nation's environmental efforts, as emissions now stand at 53% below the 1990 baseline levels, despite the economy expanding by approximately 80% over the same period.
Electricity Sector Drives Major Emissions Reduction
The most substantial decrease in emissions originated from the electricity supply sector, which experienced a notable drop due to several key factors. These include increased electricity imports, a greater reliance on renewable energy generation, and the permanent closure of the UK's final coal-fired power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar. This shift underscores the ongoing transition toward cleaner energy sources within the country's power grid.
Rising Emissions in Transport and Buildings Pose Challenges
While overall emissions fell, the data reveals some areas of concern. Domestic transport emissions rose marginally and remain the largest single contributor to pollution, accounting for 30% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, pollution from buildings and product use increased by 4%, attributed primarily to higher gas consumption. Government analysts suggest this uptick may be linked to easing energy cost pressures, which encouraged greater usage.
Government Highlights Climate Leadership and Economic Growth
Minister for Climate Katie White emphasised the importance of the findings, stating: "The science is clear, from record summer heatwaves to frequent flooding, climate change is being felt by families, businesses, and communities across the UK. Today’s stats show that Britain can be proud of its climate leadership, while also growing our economy by over 80% since 1990."
She further outlined the Government's commitment to sustained action, noting: "We are doubling down because positive climate action brings energy security, good jobs and a better future for our children and grandchildren. Over the last year, we’ve laid the foundations to hit our climate targets, including delivering a record-breaking offshore wind auction, the largest home upgrade plan ever, and the biggest nuclear building programme in half a century."
The statistical release provides a comprehensive overview of the UK's environmental performance, balancing achievements in emission reductions with the ongoing challenges in sectors like transport and residential energy use. It reflects a complex landscape where economic growth and climate action are increasingly intertwined, requiring continued policy focus and innovation to meet long-term sustainability goals.
