New rules have been put in place at Sale Water Park in Trafford amid increased fire risks, as major wildfires continue to rage across Greater Manchester. Trafford Council has introduced a temporary restriction on barbecues, fires, fireworks, and any other form of naked flame at the beauty spot, effective immediately.
Restrictions to Protect Visitors and Wildlife
The council said the ban aims to 'protect visitors, wildlife, parkland and nearby communities' and applies across Sale Water Park. The order will 'remain under review while the fire risk continues'. Increased patrols will also be in place at busy times, with security staff equipped with water and sand to safely extinguish flames if needed. The park remains open to visitors from dawn to dusk.
A Trafford council spokeswoman said: “We want everyone to enjoy Sale Water Park safely. However, the current hot and dry conditions mean there is an increased risk of fire, particularly from barbecues, fireworks and naked flames. This temporary restriction is a proportionate step to protect people, wildlife and the park itself. Visitors are very welcome to bring cold picnics, but we are asking everyone not to bring or light barbecues while the restriction is in place.”
Wildfires Rage Across Greater Manchester
The new rule comes as major wildfires continue to blaze on the moors around Greater Manchester, with major incidents declared. The wildfire at Tintwistle, above Woodhead Road in Glossop, first broke out nearly three weeks ago. It has burned an area the size of 350 football pitches and operations there are expected to go on 'for some time', according to officials.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was first called to Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham on Saturday night. A major incident was declared on Monday afternoon, with 70 firefighters tackling the blaze. Residents reported hearing 'loud bangs' prior to the fire taking hold, with videos showing youths setting off fireworks. A 20-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson.
