White clothes can be restored to their original brightness using sunlight, a natural and cost-free method that eliminates stains without harsh chemicals. The UV rays in sunlight break down stain bonds and act as a natural disinfectant, according to experts.
How Sunlight Whitens White Fabrics
Dirt explained: "The UV light in sunshine gets rid of stubborn blotches and freshens up whites by breaking down the stains in the bonds until they can no longer hold, therefore transforming them." This process works on all white items, including shirts, towels, bedsheets, and tablecloths.
The Clothes Doctor advises: "If you have any stains or murkier areas, then centre this into the sun." For best results, items should be laid flat, with nothing overlapping, to ensure direct sunlight exposure.
Step-by-Step Guide to Sun-Bleaching
Wash white garments as usual, then place them outdoors on a bright, dry day. Damp clothes work better for brightening. Leave them for two to three hours, but avoid prolonged exposure as fabrics can weaken. Molly Maid noted: "Keep in mind that leaving things out for days at a time could weaken and damage the fabric particularly if they are sensitive fabrics."
For stubborn stains, mix lemon juice with water and spray directly onto marks before sunning. The combination enhances whitening power. Repeat the process on another day if needed.
Precautions and Tips
This method is not recommended for delicate fabrics. Test a small section first if unsure. Avoid leaving items out for more than a few hours to prevent fabric damage. The technique is effective only on areas receiving direct sunlight.
