Wildfires that broke out near Stourbridge in August 2026 were made more likely and more intense by climate change, according to a rapid attribution study by climate scientists.
Study findings
The study, led by researchers from the World Weather Attribution group, found that the hot, dry conditions that fueled the fires were made approximately twice as likely by human-induced climate change.
Impact of the fires
The wildfires burned across several hectares of grassland and woodland near the town, forcing the evacuation of dozens of homes and destroying at least one property.
Fire crews from West Midlands Fire Service battled the blazes for two days before bringing them under control.

The scientists warned that such wildfires, once rare in the UK, are becoming more frequent as global temperatures rise.
They called for increased investment in fire prevention and management to adapt to the changing climate.
