Stop spiders and flies entering your home with one spice
Stop spiders and flies entering your home with one spice

A simple natural remedy could help keep spiders, flies, moths and other bugs out of your home. The trick involves placing cloves near windows and doors, a method shared online to help homeowners deter pests.

How the hack works

A video posted on TikTok by Jeff and Lauren demonstrated the household hack, showing what they place on their windowsills. Alongside the footage, they wrote: "Natural pest control! Strong scented [spices] like cinnamon, star anise and cloves help repel spiders and other bugs! Place at entry points to help to deter them!"

Cloves contain a chemical called eugenol, which has a potent aroma that flies dislike. Spiders taste and smell through specialised sensory organs and tiny hairs (setae) on their legs. The powerful aroma of clove oil overwhelms and interferes with these receptors, causing spiders to steer clear of the scent.

Other bugs deterred

Other insects are also reportedly put off by cloves, including ants, mosquitoes and moths. Cloves work as a natural repellent rather than a permanent solution or a means of extermination. With regular reapplication as the scent diminishes, it should help to keep certain bugs at bay.

How to use cloves

A DIY spray can be made with clove essential oil, or whole or ground cloves can be placed near entry points such as windowsills and doors. To make a spray, mix 10 to 15 drops of clove essential oil, a few drops of dish soap as a dispersing agent, and one cup to a quart of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use, then spritz the solution along windowsills, door frames, baseboards, dark corners and anywhere cobwebs are spotted. Reapply every few days or weekly during peak seasons.

For flies, some press 15 to 20 cloves into a freshly cut lemon or a ripe apple, placing the fruit on windowsills, kitchen counters or outdoor tables. The combination of spice and citrus creates a fragrant barrier that repels flies.
