Sleep Expert Warns Against Common Mistake During UK Heatwave
Sleep Expert Warns Against Common Heatwave Mistake

A sleep expert has identified a common mistake that could prevent people from getting a good night's rest during a heatwave. This warning comes as the Met Office forecasts extreme heat across large parts of England and Wales this week.

Met Office Issues Amber Warning

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat, affecting the South East of England, the South West, London, and large parts of Wales. The warning is in effect from 1am on Monday until 11.59pm on Tuesday, June 23. Temperatures could reach up to 34C on Tuesday.

The forecaster urges people to stay safe by drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding direct sun during peak hours, and closing curtains in sun-facing rooms. Those going out are advised to take water, stay in the shade, and wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.

Sleep Expert's Advice

Lisa Artis, founder of The Sleep Charity, has shared her top tips for sleeping well in warm weather. She highlights a common misconception: sleeping naked is not always cooler. Speaking to The I paper, she explained that lightweight sleepwear made from breathable fabrics can be more effective. Clothing helps wick sweat away from the skin, allowing it to evaporate and cool the body more efficiently. Without clothing, sweat remains on the skin or soaks into bedding, making you feel hotter and less comfortable.

Cooling Your Bedroom

Lisa recommends keeping curtains and blinds closed during the day to block out the sun. Creating the coolest possible environment makes it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. She also notes that many people place fans incorrectly. Putting a fan in a hot room may not achieve much. Instead, positioning a fan near an open window in the evening can pull cooler air into the room.

For a temporary cooling breeze, Lisa suggests placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan. Keeping windows closed during the day helps trap warm air outside. For those seeking a simple cooling method, she recommends filling a hot water bottle with cold water and placing it near your wrists or ankles to cool down at night.
