A village in Lancashire has been shaken by a second earthquake in under a month, with locals describing the event as "one hell of a bang."

Details of the Latest Tremor

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that a 2.2-magnitude earthquake struck Silverdale at 9:35 PM on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Residents across the area and as far as Grange-over-Sands and Bolton-le-Sands reported hearing "a big thud" and "a burst of noise" that resembled "a distant explosion."

Previous Seismic Activity

This latest quake follows a 2.3-magnitude earthquake that hit the same village on May 13, as well as a smaller 0.4-magnitude tremor on April 12. Since late 2025, several earthquakes have been recorded in the area, including two in December and additional seismic activity in February and March 2026.

Local residents took to social media on Saturday evening after the tremor. Jay Stride posted: "Another earthquake just happened?" James Black wrote: "One hell of a bang that," while Neil Wood added: "It was very loud here and whole tower shook." Jane Caldwell remarked: "I thought so too! Thought someone had slammed a door and it shook the sofa!!" Victoria Kaye Holt said: "My house just shook." Additional reports described the event as feeling like a big thud, a distant explosion, or a burst of noise around Morecambe Bay.
