Sainsbury's recalls olives over listeria in latest FSA alerts

Sainsbury's has issued an urgent 'do not eat' recall for its Inspired to Cook by Sainsbury's Pitted Black Olives after Listeria monocytogenes was detected in the product. The recall is part of the latest round of food and product alerts published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Listeria symptoms and risks

Symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications such as meningitis.

Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

Product details and refunds

The affected product is Inspired to Cook by Sainsbury's Pitted Black Olives, pack size 120g, with use-by dates of 06 September 2026, 07 September 2026 and 10 September 2026.

Shoppers who have bought the product are advised not to eat it and instead return it to their nearest Sainsbury's store for a full refund. Further information is available on the Sainsbury's website at Sainsburys.co.uk/help or by contacting the careline on 0800 028 8303.

Waitrose recall over undeclared gluten

Waitrose & Partners is also recalling Waitrose Rhubarb Crumble because the product contains oats (gluten) which are not declared on the label. The product has a use-by date of 19 August 2026 but has home freezing instructions to consume within one month of freezing.

This product contains gluten, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to oats or gluten, or with coeliac disease. The affected product is Waitrose Rhubarb Crumble, pack size 500g, with use-by date 19 August 2026.

Customers who have bought the product and have an allergy or intolerance to oats or gluten or have coeliac disease should not eat it and should return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund. For more information, contact Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 884 (option 4).
