RSPCA Warns AI 'Ticking Time Bomb' for Pet Welfare

The RSPCA has warned that AI chatbots are a 'ticking time bomb' for animal welfare in the North East, as more pet owners turn to artificial intelligence to avoid costly vet bills. The charity's Animal Kindness Index reveals that 8% of pet owners in the region now routinely use AI for advice on pet care.

AI Use for Symptom Checking and Behavior Advice

Among those using AI, 61% consulted it for symptom checking in unwell pets, while 56% sought advice on behavior and body language. The RSPCA fears this reliance on AI could lead to complacency, untreated illnesses, and even legal breaches if suffering pets go untreated.

Cost of Living Driving AI Reliance

Almost half (48%) of North East pet owners worry about affording vet bills, with 9% reducing spending on vet care due to financial pressures. Additionally, 6% said economic pressures drove their use of AI for health advice. The index also found 22% skip annual check-ups, and 4% are not registered with a vet.

Expert Warning

Gemma Hope, RSPCA Assistant Director of Policy, Advocacy and Evidence, said: 'Whether we like it or not, AI is a game changer - including for animal welfare. But we're worried that... this could be an inadvertent ticking time bomb for animal welfare. AI chatbots cannot physically examine an animal, check their bloods, or understand fast-moving changes when a pet is in pain.' She urged owners to contact a vet immediately if in doubt.

RSPCA's Pet Cost Calculator

To help owners prepare for expenses, the RSPCA launched a Pet Cost Calculator. Hope added: 'Pet ownership is a massive responsibility, and can be expensive. That's why we've created a calculator to help people prepare and decide which pet may be right for them and their budget.'
