Walking Scotland, the charity dedicated to integrating walking and wheeling into daily life, has announced the launch of East Kilbride's first Walking Action Plan. The community-led initiative aims to enhance safety, ease, and enjoyment for pedestrians and wheeled mobility aid users in the Calderwood and St Leonards areas.
Community Input Drives the Plan
The action plan was developed following extensive consultations with local residents, who shared their experiences, ideas, and priorities for walking and wheeling. The launch event will detail how this feedback has shaped the plan's recommendations and next steps. Walking Scotland emphasises that the plan is designed to help everyone—whether walking unaided or using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking frames, prams, or buggies—benefit from physical, social, and mental health improvements.
Launch Event Details
Residents, local organisations, and anyone interested in healthier, more connected communities are invited to the launch at St Leonards Library, St Leonards Square, East Kilbride, G74 2AT, on Saturday, June 27, from 9:30am to 12:30pm. The event will showcase the plan and explain how community feedback has shaped its recommendations.
Broader Impact
Walking Scotland works to promote the benefits of walking and wheeling, connect communities, inspire positive behaviour change, and improve places and spaces. By focusing on inclusive active travel, the charity aims to address challenges such as health inequalities and the climate-nature emergency. For more information, visit walkingscotland.org.uk.
