Cleaning expert and TikTok star Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila, has shared a simple two-item trick to stop mould from developing in wardrobes without a dehumidifier. The hack involves placing uncooked rice in a fabric drawstring bag with a dash of lemon oil to absorb excess moisture.
Why wardrobes are prone to mould
Mould continues to affect households across the UK, with damp patches appearing in unexpected places. Wardrobes are especially vulnerable, where lack of care allows spores to grow on garments and shoes, causing permanent damage. Dampness, limited ventilation, and natural fabrics create ideal conditions for mould, which thrives in humid settings where moisture gathers on cold surfaces and damp clothes provide breeding grounds.
The rice and lemon oil solution
In her recent video, Chantel advised placing uncooked rice in a fabric drawstring bag along with lemon oil to combat moisture buildup. Rice acts as a natural desiccant, drawing moisture from the surrounding air and materials, while lemon oil leaves wardrobes smelling fresh.
DIY specialist Tim Warren from Adkwik told Ideal Home that wardrobe humidity should ideally stay between 40 and 60%. While a dehumidifier is the most effective solution, desiccants like rice and baking soda also pull moisture from the air. Warren said: "Placing these in your wardrobe can help to keep the air dry, reducing the risk of mould growth. You can also buy artificial moisture-absorbing desiccants, such as silica gel packets or charcoal bags."
