Remove Mould from Windowsills Using Two Common Kitchen Items
Remove Mould from Windowsills with Two Kitchen Items

Mould is a common and persistent problem in British homes, but experts say two kitchen items can help tackle it on windowsills. Despite temperatures beginning to rise, mould remains a persistent issue in homes across Britain. Regardless of how frequently you tackle it, the problem keeps returning — and windowsills are among the most troublesome spots.

Simple and Affordable Solution

Many homeowners reach for specialist mould sprays and pricey cleaning products, but experts suggest there's a straightforward and affordable solution. Allan Reid, uPVC specialist and founder of Art Windows and Doors, explained: "Mould around windows is usually a sign that moisture is hanging around for too long. A lot of the time it starts with condensation building up on the glass or windowsill."

Cleaning it away will get rid of what you can see, but if the moisture keeps coming back, the mould often does too. His recommendation is to use kitchen roll and bleach to eliminate mould from windowsills. Simply dilute the bleach, soak a piece of kitchen roll in the mixture, leave it on the affected area, then wipe it clean.

Expert Advice

Allan added: "Simple cleaning tricks like this can definitely help. But if you keep finding mould in exactly the same spot, there's usually something else going on, whether that's too much moisture in the room or not enough airflow."

Preventing Mould from Returning

To prevent mould from returning, adopting a few straightforward daily habits can make a real difference. If you regularly notice condensation forming in the same areas, it's essential to wipe away the moisture promptly so it doesn't linger on surfaces for extended periods.

Another method to prevent mould returning is by making sure the room has adequate ventilation. This can be achieved by opening windows each day, even during colder months. Simply a few minutes daily can significantly impact mould prevention. Where practical, you should also refrain from drying washing indoors, and if necessary ensure it's kept away from window ledges or exterior walls.
