Met Office Issues Rare Red Warning
The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for Wednesday and Thursday in the face of extreme heat and humidity. The forecaster said that parts of England and Wales are likely to see temperatures exceed 37C in the shade, potentially reaching 38C to 40C in some locations.
Extreme Heat and Humidity
The extreme heat, which has been very rare in the UK until now, will be accompanied by high humidity. Very warm and humid nights will make it hard for people to recover overnight, the Met Office said. The heat will have impacts on health, and there will be “significant disruption” to daily life, it warned.
Public Health Advisory
The Met Office urged people to adapt their routines where possible to cope with the heat. The warning covers large parts of England and Wales, with the highest temperatures expected in central and southern areas.
Previous Heat Events
This is the first red warning for heat since the new system was introduced. The UK experienced record-breaking temperatures last July, exceeding 40C for the first time. The current heatwave is expected to be shorter but still dangerous.
