Prue Leith Fears for Reform MP Son's Safety After Widdecombe Murder
Prue Leith Fears for Son's Safety After Widdecombe Murder

Dame Prue Leith has revealed her fears for the safety of her son, Reform MP Danny Kruger, following the murder of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe last week. The killing is currently being investigated by counter-terrorism police.

Leith's Concerns for Her Son

The 86-year-old Great British Bake Off star, mother to Danny Kruger, 51, MP for East Wiltshire, spoke about her worries in an interview with Times Radio's John Pienaar. Kruger defected from the Conservative Party to Reform in September 2025.

Asked if she was concerned for her son's safety, Leith said: "Well, I am to be honest. I haven't even rung him up about it because I don't want him having to add to the worry the fact that his mother is worrying."

She added: "Honestly, I think the government will do everything it can to protect MPs and there are dangers in every walk of life and this is one that MPs have to have in the back of their minds. But I think it is scary. It seems so amazing that this should be happening in the UK, which I've always thought of as the most civilised country about politics."

Reflections on Political Climate

Leith suggested that the country had changed, stating: "It's always been a proper country. You don't reach for the gun when you don't agree with somebody, you debate it and you vote on it."

She also noted that she does not always agree with her son's political views but they maintain a civil relationship. "We do talk a lot about politics and I don't always agree with Danny on politics but one of the great things is we don't mind disagreeing, it's all perfectly civilised," she said.

Family Background

Danny is Leith's only son, from her marriage to the late Rayne Kruger, an author and property developer who died in 2002 at age 80. The couple also adopted a Cambodian daughter, Li-Da.

These comments come as Leith revealed a unique clause in her TV contracts that allows her to nap during work. She told The Sun: "All my new telly contracts have a snooze clause. I am entitled to have an afternoon siesta while filming. I came up with it, and it works. Everybody has to stop what they are doing for an hour!"

Leith's Departure from Bake Off

Leith left Bake Off in February, stating that after nine years on the show, "now feels like the right time to step back". She added: "There's so much I'd like to do."
