For 18 years, Sedgemoor Splash was a cherished family destination in Bridgwater, Somerset, before closing its doors in 2009 and being transformed into a new leisure complex. The indoor water park, affectionately known as 'The Splash', featured an array of pools, water slides, flumes, and rides, making it a perfect spot for family fun.
Royal Opening and Legacy
Built in 1991, the venue brought something fresh to the area, generating enormous excitement when Sedgemoor District Council secured Princess Diana to officially open it. It quickly became the go-to destination for locals seeking indoor entertainment on wet days. The water park operated successfully for 18 years before economic pressures forced its closure.
Closure and Redevelopment
In 2009, Sedgemoor Splash shut its doors, making way for the Northgate Yard complex, a reported £16m investment. The site now houses a cinema, restaurants, a gym, and over 100 parking spaces. The closure was largely attributed to dwindling council funds due to the global economic crisis, with councillors deeming the £700,000 annual running costs unsustainable.
Community Reaction
Former visitors expressed their dismay on Facebook, sharing cherished memories. One local wrote: 'Splash needs to be bought back! There's no decent pools anymore.' Another said: 'Spent most of my teenage years there... It's a shame they knocked it down.' Protesters occupied the pool in defiance, with 13 people allegedly staying overnight, but efforts failed to halt redevelopment.
New Waterpark Destination
Unity Splash Waterpark in Brean, about 30 minutes away, now serves as Somerset's go-to water park. A £10m investment is expected to add two pool areas, a lazy river, a larger family seating area, and a new boardwalk.
