A hospital in Malaysia is grappling with a severe pigeon and crow infestation after a viral video captured the birds wandering through a ward, consuming patients' food, and leaving droppings on beds. The footage, shared on social media platform Threads, has sparked widespread criticism over hygiene standards at the HTAR hospital in Malaysia.
Video Shows Birds Roaming Ward
The shocking clip appears to show at least four birds moving freely around the ward. Some birds were seen perching on beds near patients' heads, while others pecked at discarded food containers. The user who posted the video alleged that bird droppings were scattered across the room. Remarkably, the patients in the footage seemed unfazed by the feathered intruders, and no hospital staff were visible addressing the situation.
Public Outcry and Defenses
The video prompted heavy criticism online. One user commented, 'No patient should be recovering in a ward shared with pigeons.' However, some commenters defended hospital employees, attributing the problem to insufficient funding and understaffing. A user noted, 'Healthcare workers face challenges due to limited facilities,' and urged the Malaysian Health Ministry to increase hospital funding. Others highlighted health risks, with one writing, 'Birds carry viruses and bacteria. What if the patient already has an infection? There is no hygiene in this hospital.'
Hospital Response
HTAR hospital acknowledged the issue with 'pigeons and crows' and outlined measures to address it. In a statement released on June 8, the hospital explained that the birds have made the surrounding trees their habitat, occasionally leading to them entering buildings. To combat this, HTAR has implemented regular tree pruning by a concession company and continuous monitoring of ward areas and hospital buildings. The hospital has also sought assistance from local authorities to strengthen bird control efforts within the grounds.
Commitment to Safety
HTAR emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and conducive environment for patients, visitors, and staff. The hospital stated, 'All appropriate measures will continue to be implemented from time to time to reduce the risk of similar incidents recurring.' The facility assured the public that it takes the matter seriously and remains dedicated to preventing future occurrences.
