Perth Boxing Coach Launches Cathy's Song Fundraiser for Cancer Charity
Perth Coach Launches Cancer Charity Boxing Event

Perth boxing coach John Andrew McKechnie has unveiled plans for 'Cathy's Song', a white-collar boxing and live music fundraising event set to take place at UHI Perth on October 24. The event aims to raise crucial funds for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his late mother, Cathy.

Event Details and Participants

The evening will combine boxing matches, live music, and community fundraising. Former heavyweight world champion Frank Bruno and Scottish singer-songwriter Callum Beattie are scheduled to appear and perform. McKechnie, founder of Corporate Warrior Scotland and a former amateur heavyweight boxer, said the project stems from personal grief and a desire to create something positive.

Personal Motivation

McKechnie explained: 'This started from grief, remembrance and wanting to build something positive. Cathy’s Song is for my mum, Cathy, and for my late boxing mentor Dave Thompson MBE, who both had a massive influence on my life. Boxing gave me structure and purpose growing up, and I wanted to create something that could hopefully do the same for other people.'

Community and Venue Development

Originally from Perth and now living in Blairgowrie, McKechnie is a former pupil of St Columba’s RC High School and Perth College. He has trained in Thailand and Australia alongside offshore work. The event coincides with McKechnie's development of Glove Diamonds Combat Club in Perth, a boutique boxing and fitness facility on Scott Street, formerly a restaurant and bar. The club focuses on small-group coaching, mentorship, discipline, and community wellbeing, welcoming both beginners and experienced boxers.

McKechnie also draws inspiration from his family and community roots, including close connections to late Dundee musician Danny Brady, recognized as part of the city's music heritage. He stated: 'There’s a strong community side to all of this. It’s about Perth, Dundee, boxing, music, family, second chances and trying to create something positive from difficult experiences. I’ve worked on this quietly for a long time now, and I just want to build something people can feel proud of.'

Support and Legacy

McKechnie thanked UHI Perth, QTS North Contracts, Mantalk, Macmillan Cancer Support, and numerous other sponsors, coaches, and community members for their support. He envisions the event as the start of a long-term legacy promoting health, wellbeing, and community spirit through boxing and music. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 10, with more information available at www.corporatewarrior.co.uk.
